Getting your dream car can be a significant box you can tick off from your bucket list. Your car reflects your choice of style and stands as a symbol of social status. The way you maintain your vehicle, however, is a responsibility more significant than when you purchased it. The car’s hygiene, at the top of the list, is a whole new story. Psychologists have unraveled essential points about your well-being when it comes to how you keep your car tidy and presentable.


A Clean Car And Your Character 

Licensed clinical psychologist Nicole Cutts, PhD, explains that your car’s cleanliness gives an insight into your personality and leaves an impression on the people surrounding you. She says, “No matter what you drive, the way you maintain your car, inside and out, gives people some insight into your personality.”

Hence, if you have filled your car with different sorts of accumulated trash and personal belongings, then your mental state could be at odds. It shows your character, which is a buildup of habits defining who you are. At the same time, it also manifests your current emotional state. If the inside looks like a garbage pile of belongings, then you just might come off as someone who lacks discipline. Since cleanliness is a responsibility, most especially if you are offering someone a ride, then it shows how you value it. Giving dirty food is something you would not do. But how would you ask people to ride in a smelly and messy car? 

It could also indicate that you are living a very hectic life, and you do not care about cleanliness at all. Multitasking leaves no room for organization, and your car is an extension of the clutter that comes with it. Your car is an environment considered to be your second home. Studies have further shown that a messy area also reveals signs of depression and fatigue. A cluttered space raises an individual’s cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone produced by your body in response to stress, and elevated cortisol levels can slow down your decision-making skills and increase anxiety.   


According to Ralph Ryback, MD, from Harvard Medical School, there are also simple reasons why cleanliness is not a commitment. He explains, “It wouldn’t be surprising, then, if the reason we crave symmetry and cleanliness in our homes is to mirror the organization within our very own bodies. Neatness and order support health — and oppose chaos.” Habitually avoiding the task can be a result of some factors.

  • Unmanageable Clutter

A person accumulates different stuff over the years and opting to store these can be the start of clutter buildup. It might seem daunting, but evaluating the things you keep can be the beginning of trimming your clutter. To solve this, you start by having only the essentials. You should also put away things you can use in the future. Your car is not a storage room. It is your home.

It becomes a distraction and makes it harder for you to start working. Cleaning, therefore, is a must. Correlatively, a study published in the journal Mindfulness showed how cleaning decreases anxiety levels. This situation is similar to “having control” of the spaces where you exist. A car’s hygiene is also an indication of how you take charge of your areas.   


According to Sherrie Bourg Carter, PsyD, a psychologist, and author of High Octane Women, we always connect clutter with depressing emotions. “Messy homes and work spaces leave us feeling anxious, helpless, and overwhelmed,” she explains. “Yet, rarely is clutter recognized as a significant source of stress in our lives.”

Cleanliness, on the other hand, evokes positivity and well-being. So why sleep on an important task that you should be doing for yourself and your beloved engine? Your car’s welfare in your hands, and how you keep its excellent condition is a statement you make for yourself.
